The Story…
Everyone needs some peace and quiet every now and again. Most people take a hike or run a bubble bath to feel away from it all, but building your own island out of recycled plastic bottles is also an option. Richart Sowa was doing just that when we discovered him, and we were instantly intrigued by his passion for building unique, eco-friendly islands.
When we told DIY Network about Richart’s upcoming bottle island build, they thought it would be a perfect episode for their Building Off the Grid series. So we packed our camera bags and headed down to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Richart and his son, Eden, laid out all the plans to create a floating island that was to be completely self-sustaining, constructing “eco-vations” like a solar-powered oven and a wave-powered air conditioner. These fascinating projects called for some creative problem solving and made for a truly eccentric and adventurous production. We may have gotten a bit sunburned but the stunning reveal of this innovative, floating island was well worth the aloe applications.
